FASHION FILES: FASHION CHALLENGE

A few weeks ago, while shopping with my sister, I came across these divine  Dolce Vita Marcel suede tassel loafers. Though I died for them, I knew they were much better suited for my sister; she has a very fun, cool style a la Solange Knowles and Kate Moss, who also happen to be her style icons. As expected, it took  little effort on my part to get her to buy them.

Though it fits her style to the T, she still hasn't worn them because  she just doesn't see how they fit with what  is currently in her wardrobe. So, instead of going out a getting a whole new wardrobe to match the shoes, which I've actually seen people do, she challenged me to style her shoes with what she already has in her closet. I had to accept this challenge because I was the one who convinced her to to buy them in the first place.

Fortunately, she had some amazing pieces in her closet, so it wasn't too hard for me to put a few looks together...

TO MY FELLOW FIERCE FEMALES...

Seeing as this is the last week of Women's Month, I thought I'd take the time out to speak to all of the women out there.

I am such a girl's girl; I love being a woman, we're strong, positive, fearless, honest, smart, open-minded, forgiving, and the list goes on and on. Of all of the things that I am labeled as, stylish, African, actress, being a woman is the one that I hold most dear to my heart, and the one that I take the most pride in. I completely subscribe to the philosophy of Girl Power, so many women inspire me, and not just my celebrity sheros. I've learned so much from so many amazing people. I believe that we as women need to love, respect and support one another, that's why on my blog I love celebrating other women of all walks of life and their stories, successes, style, etc. Nothing disappoints me more than  when I see women bad-mouthing each other, disrespecting each other, and having what I like to call a mean girl mentality towards each other.

Even in this day and age, where we've made so many strides forward, there are still injustices that we face every day. For example,we're still paid less than men for doing the same work. I think it's silly that instead of trying to fight these injustices, we're too busy bringing each other down. Don't believe me? Just turn on your television.  About 99% of reality shows are just a bunch of women hating on each other and calling each other names, and sometimes the name calling escalates to violence. Don't even get me started on what goes on in the average middle school, those girls can be down right malicious! So, I beg the question, how can we expect men to take us seriously when we don't take each other seriously?

Beyonce's Who Run the World video

I think it all stems from insecurity, personally. People are sometimes so insecure about their own situation that it's just easier to criticize and lash-out at someone else. Look how fat she is?! She's such a slut! What a b****! Sadly, these are just a few choice words I've heard women say about each other.

I believe that one of the things we can do to move forward is to first start celebrating each others' success rather than our mistakes. I see far too many people taking enjoyment in others' misery and suffering. Enough! If you see someone in need, give them a hand or a shoulder to cry on. Also, stop gossiping. Just. Stop. Truth be told, if you had things going on in your own life, you wouldn't be so concerned with someone else's and you wouldn't feel the need to gossip. That being said, get a hobby. Read a book. Take a dance class. Practice yoga. Write in a journal. Meditate. Volunteer. Do whatever it takes to keep you too busy to gossip.

Remember, we're not in competition with each other. Someone else's success or failure should not be a reflection on you and your work. Just do the best that you can and don't worry about what other people are doing. There is no need to sabotage someone else, that just screams desperation and insecurity.

The Spice Girls were all about GIRL POWER
Finally, let's teach our daughter's by example. Girls don't learn to gossip and name call on their own, they usually pick those habits up from their mothers. So please remember to watch your words, and also remember to encourage your daughters. Though I say daughters, this is also true for any young girl in your life.

To all of my ladies out there, I really do think that you're all beautiful, strong, amazing, and FABULOUS. I just hope that you believe it and that we start treating each other with a bit more respect. Just think of what we could accomplish if we worked with instead of against each other?

POPSUGAR & SPICE & EVERYTHING NICE

I had the pleasure of attending the POPSUGAR Class: FitSugar Event with Mandy Ingber. For those of you who don't know, Mandy Ingber is an amazing, Los Angeles-based yoga instructor, who teaches her own style of yoga called Yogalosophy, which is a hybrid of traditional yoga poses with traditional toning exercises...oh, and one of her students just happens to be Jennifer Aniston. No big.

YOU'RE SUCH A BUDAPEST

OPI You're Such a Budapest
OPI has done it again! I'm obsessed with their new Euro Centrale Collection, for Spring. Though they've done European collections in the past, a  French collection for Fall 2008, a Russian Collection for Fall 2007, and mostly recently a German collection  for 2012, this collection focuses on central Europe: the Czech Republic, Romania and Hungary.

My personal favorite of the collection is You're Such a Budapest. It's a beautiful lavender color, which in all the years I've worn polish is a color I've never tried. I absolutely adore it A perfect shade for Spring.

"Besides the colors, I've always loved the names OPI comes  up with for their polishes. For Euro Centrale, I love the names  A Woman’s Prague-ative, You’re Such A BudaPest and Can’t Find My Czechbook....so clever"- The Fab Glam Diva

FASHION POWER COUPLE: POSH-N-BECKS

At a charity event
So we're all pretty familiar with power couples like Barak and Michelle; Brad and Angelina;  Ellen and Portia; Cory and Topanga. Usually couples are given this status because of their networth, celebrity standing, visibility, contributions, etc. However,  I think that it's time we delve a bit into what really defines a power couple; personally, I think that the element that makes a real power couple is how fashionably compatible they are, of course!

MUSIC MONDAY: SERGE GAINSBOURG

Singer-songwriter Serge Gainsbourg is definitely one of the my favorite musicians. His music is fun, witty, scandalous, controversial, sexy, playful and a bit random...just like his life. He's been duplicated, imitated and has influenced so many other musicians, that I also admire, like Beck and Sebastien Tellier.

Of all of the great work he's done, like Bonnie and Clyde, Je T'aime...moi non plus, Ford Mustang and Initials B.B., my favorite Gaisnbourg songs would definitely have to be Ballade de Melody Nelson, (warning this is a Lolita-esque love story, and the lyrics are actually pretty naughty); La Javanaise, and La Noyee, which is hauntingly beautiful..

If you want to get familiar with Serge, I highly recommend that you check out his greatest hits album Initials S.G. to get a better feel for the man that I believe is a musical genius.

FASHION FILES: PARIS FASHION WEEK

Paris, along with being the fashion capital of he world, is my favorite city in the world, so it's fitting that Paris Fashion Week is my favorite, of all the Fashion Weeks. The designers that showed brought their A-game to the city of lights, I loved pretty much every collection, so much so that it was difficult for me to choose just ten collections, so I ended up choosing a bit more...15 to be exact.

Hope you love these collections as much as I did! Bisous

STYLE STAPLE: JUST BLAZIN'

T-Shirt and jeans. Simple and chic
One of the things I love about living in L.A. is how casual and laid back we are, especially with fashion. Don't get me wrong, I love getting dressed to the nines, but  I don't think you have to be done-up all the time. However, I think my causal is a bit different than most people's, and I think a lot of people tend to be too casual; I've literally seen people walking down the street wearing pajamas..a little too casual, I think.  LOL

A classic, white blazer. Tres chic!
So, how can you be laid back and casual, while still looking put together? Simple. All you need to do is keep it simple and make sure you have a few staples in your closet. One of my favorite staple pieces is a blazer. A blazer is a must-have in any wardrobe and makes you look like you put in effort, without looking like you tried too hard. The best thing about a blazer is that it is a piece that can take you from day-tonight; it smartens up any outfit; it can be a statement piece on its own.
